As such - 古德明

It is very cold today. As such, I have put on more clothes(今天很冷,我因此多穿了衣服)?

(1)Mr Leung is a communist, and as such can lie like a gas meter(梁先生是共產黨徒,而既是共產黨徒,自然可以謊話連篇)。

(2)A name, as such, means nothing(名字本身是沒有意思的)。

As it is very cold today, I have put on more clothes。

Shut the front door -

問:Shut the front door是什麼意思?

有時,為了加強語氣,會說shut the fuck / the hell / the heck up,那fuck(肏)、hell(地獄)、heck(=hell)等字,都嫌粗鄙,於是有人改說shut the front door,其中的shut the f──,使人以為跟着的一定是── uck up,不料那fuck up卻變成front door。

The police acted like a loving mother towards the protesters."

No ... or、Neither ... or - 古德明

He said no teachers or students were hurt(他說師生都沒有受傷)。句中的no ... or改為neither ... nor,會不會好一點?

Neither teachers nor students should forget that the end of education is to promote a just society(教師、學生都不應忘記,教育旨在建設公平的社會)。

Schedule for - 古德明

The meeting is scheduled for 1 January(會議定於一月一日舉行)這一句,假如日期1 January之前加上時間12:30 pm(下午十二點半),for要不要改為at?

(1)The meeting is scheduled for 12:30 pm on 1 January(或The meeting is scheduled to take place at 12:30 pm on 1 January)。

(2)The cancer patient is scheduled for chemotherapy(那癌症病人已安排做化學治療)。

so ... as to - 古德明

問:讀報見到以下一句,其中so ... as to這句式是怎樣用的?──The Chief Secretary said she would not be so naive as to think that the clearance of the protest sites would be the end of the matter。

答:「So+形容詞+as to」是指「到……

(1)He is not so old as to be unable to work(他並非老得不能工作)。

(2)How could you be so stupid as to believe him?(你怎麼蠢得相信他?)

What、How - 古德明

How does she look?

或What is... like?

(1)"How is the weather outside? / What is the weather like outside?" "It is frightful, not fit for man or beast."(「

(2)"How does she look? / What does she look like?" "She is tall and pretty."(「

Arrange、Arrange to、Arrange for - 古德明

Please arrange for the documents to be signed by the directors(請安排把文件送交各董事簽署)這一句,for字可不可以畧去?

Arrange解作「排列」或「整理」,其後當然可以直接受詞(object),例如to arrange the documents in chronological order是「按日期先後排列文件」。

Swim、Swimming -

(1)After lunch, we went for a swim in a nearby river(我們吃過午飯,就去附近一條河游泳)。

(2)I think swimming as a sport is better than jogging(論運動,我認為游泳勝於慢跑)。

Your good self、You - 古德明

答:英文沒有goodself一字,但有your good self/ selves一詞,是you(你/你們)的客氣說法。 Instead of"your good self", say"you"(用you取代your good self)。

I have been much impressed with the very cordial treatment I received from your good self during my two weeks' stay in Hong Kong。 I deeply appreciate the very cordial treatment I received from you during...。

Here it is、Here you are - 古德明

May I borrow your pen?(可以借你的筆用用嗎?)同意借筆應說Here it is還是Here you are?

答:Here it is / Here they are可以表示「(要找的東西)在這裏」,也可表示「這就是(你要的東西)」,例如:

(1)Where are my keys? Oh, here they are(我的鑰匙哪裏去了?

(2)"Can you pass me the sugar please?" "Here it is."(「把糖遞給我好嗎?」「好,給你,拿着。」)

Direct speech、Indirect speech -

The project was completed on 30 June(計劃已於六月三十日完成)這句話,以下哪個轉述方式(indirect speech)正確?──She said the project was completed / had been completed on 30 June。

She said Tom had enjoyed his work,表明「湯姆喜歡他的工作」是轉述之前的事。

Non-finite Clause -

問:貴欄日前有以下一句,句子下半截是什麼文法結構?──A British lieutenant was ordered to take the Russian battery, the force to consist of his own company and two other companies(一英軍中尉奉命率領其麾下以及另外兩個步兵連,奪取俄軍砲臺)。

(1)They were to leave for Japan, and their mission was to bomb Hiroshima。

(2)They were to leave for Japan, their mission being to bomb Hiroshima。

Part of、But、Only - 古德明

Protests are but part of bigger picture. Protests are nothing but a part of a bigger picture的縮略?

(1)Work is(a)part of life(工作是人生的一部分)。

(2)Work is an important part of life(工作是人生重要的一部分)。

Think、Think of - 古德明

Think Macau, and the first things that come to mind are often the bustling entertainment resorts and authentic Portuguese cuisine。
那Think Macau二字,我會改為Think of Macau。

(1)If you need computing services, Think IBM(假如你要電腦服務,只須想到國際商用機器公司)。

(1)Down with dictatorship! Down with the Communists!(打倒獨裁!

Up for、Thus、Therefore - 古德明

Who's up for some rest and relaxation time?

(1)Anyone up for a game of cards?(有沒有人想玩紙牌遊戲?)

(2)We are going for a drink. Are you up for it?(我們去喝杯東西,你有興趣一起去嗎?)

Between、Among - 古德明

A Walk Among the Tombstones。這兩句可不可改為Just among friends和a walk between the tombstones?

答:Between、among都可譯作「在…… (In all senses, "between" has been, from its earliest appearance, extended to more than two)。」

Out of the blue -

The rain poured out of the blue sky?

答:Out of the blue其實就是out of a blue sky(出自藍天)的縮略,正如a bolt from(或out of)the blue(藍天出現的閃電)一樣。 After years of absence, he called me out of the blue(他不見多年之後,突然打電話給我)。

Should you、If you would、Because - 古德明

Should you would like to join the tea gathering, please register on or before 15 October(有意出席茶聚者,至遲請於十月十五日登記)。Should you would like是正確說法嗎?

答:英文不可說Should you would like,宜改正為If you would like to...或Should you like to...。 If you would like to較好:would like是want(想、要)的委婉說法,着重對方的意願;Should you like to則等於If you should like to,那should有點「不肯定」的意思。例如:

(1)If you would like to see me, call me any time(你想見我,隨時打電話給我好了)。
