單數名詞、複數代名詞 - 古德明

問：以下兩句，所說租客是某公司，但第一句的tenant是單數名詞，第二句可用複數代名詞they嗎？──The tenant has made an offer. They expect to have our reply soon（租客已交提議，期待我們盡快回答）。

答：英文代名詞的男女、單複數問題，向來爭議不少。要而言之，單數名詞假如或有複數含義，可以配複數代名詞。以下兩句，一出自英國名作家蕭伯納手筆，一出自美國出版社Atlantic Publishing Group的房屋租賃指南The Complete Guide to Your First Rental Property，可供參考：

（1）No man goes to battle to be killed. But they do get killed（上戰場者，都不想死，但總有人會死）。

（2）The judge asks the tenant if they owe the money（法官問租客是否欠租）。讀者示下那兩句，用they是可以的，但當然也可改寫如下：The tenant has made an offer, and expects to have our reply soon。

同樣，兼指男女的單數名詞，傳統文法規定應用he、him等作代名詞，但現在也往往改用they、them等。例如A student must respect their teachers（學生必須尊敬老師）這一句，有些人會認為their應改為his，但女學生未必高興；有些人會把their改為his or her，但這說法很累贅，口頭上更幾乎沒有人用。讀者文摘出版的Success with Words有以下一句，證明用himself有時不如用themselves好：She and Louis had a game—— who could find the ugliest photograph of himself（她和路易士玩遊戲，各找自己最難看的照片）。這一句的himself讀來非常刺眼。
