問：以下一句，while之後是不是應改用進行式動詞？── While they happily enjoy macaroons beside Eiffel Tower, a face they didn't expect to see appears（他們在艾菲爾鐵塔之旁吃雞蛋杏仁餅，正吃得津津有味，來了一個他們沒想過會見到的人）。

答：While解作「在……期間」，假如說的是現在，一般的確會用ing動詞。讀者示下那一句，我寫也會改用While they are happily enjoying等。不過，while之後用簡單現在式動詞，文法上不能算是錯誤。十九世紀英國詩人Sydney Yendys戲劇The Roman第七幕有以下一句：While he looks the sun is higher, while he looks the star grows old（他看着看着，太陽升高了；他看着看着，那顆星老了）。當然，這一句的looks改為is looking也絕對可以。

While和簡單現在式動詞連用，多是指「經常如此」或「將會」做的事。以下兩句，一摘自十九世紀英國週刊Chambers's Journal第三三八期，一摘自二十世紀英國著名作家J B Priestley小說Angel Pavement，可供參考：

（1）The royal barber, not being permitted to touch anything with his hands, has to find a friend to hold the cup to his lips while he drinks his allowance（御用理髮師循例不得用手觸摸任何東西，得找個朋友拿酒杯湊到他唇邊，然後喝酒）。

（2）Come on, get these things away while I make the tea（來，我沏茶的時候，你把這些東西拿走）。
