「最快樂」和「十分可貴」 - 古德明

問：一本英文文法書A Comprehensive Grammar for Foreign Students說，以下兩句的最高級形容詞（superlative）之前不必用the：

（1）He is happiest when he is working（他工作時，心情最好）。

（2）Your help is most valuable（你的幫忙十分可貴）。兩句的is之後，可以加the嗎？

答：一般而言，最高級形容詞或副詞（adverb）須冠以the，例如：

（1）He seems to be the happiest man in the world（他似乎是世上最快樂的人）。

（2）Which of these three watches is the most valuable?（這三隻手錶，哪一隻最值錢？）

不過，說某人、某事物在不同情況之下「最××」的表現，循例不用the，例如：

（1）The air is freshest in the morning（空氣早上最清新）。

（2）A poet writes best when he is really moved（詩人真正有動於中的時候，所寫的詩篇最好）。讀者說的第一句，正是這類句子，happiest之前不可以加the。

現在說第二句，most可以解作「最」或「十分」：假如解作「最」，一般須冠以the；解作「十分」，則不用the，例如：

（1）This is the most important case I have ever handled（我處理過的事情，這一宗最重要）。

（2）He is a most diligent man（他是個十分勤奮的人）。

讀者說的第二句，那most是「十分」的意思，所以不應加the，但以下一句則應用the：Many people have offered us their help. Your help is the most important（不少人答應給我們援手，而你的援手最為重要）。
