兩者都不、將會 - 古德明

問：貴欄說「你和他都不對」不可寫作Either you or he isn't right，而可寫作Both you and he aren't right。但有文法書說both不可用於否定句，這說法對嗎？

答：文法書一般是說both「少用」於否定句，例如Collins COBUILD English Usage both條下有言：You do not usually use"both" in negative sentences。但這不是說否定句不可用both。請看十七世紀英國清教徒兼詩人Richard Baxter《基督教道德》（Christian Ethics）第三章論「明知故犯」和「無知而犯」這兩種罪過：If both were not sinful, they would not both be punished with stripes（假如兩者都不是罪咎，兩者就都不會招來鞭打的懲罰）。類似的句子，歷來屢見不鮮。當然，要說「兩者都不是……」，neither較both常用，例如「你和他都不對」大可以說：Neither you nor he is right。

問："Shall I ever see Mary again?" he wondered（他想：「我將來還會見到瑪麗嗎？」）這一句，改為轉述句（reported speech），英文老師說應作He wondered if he would ever see Mary again，那would可不可改為should？

答：說「將會」，I和we可配shall或will，而he、she、they則須配will。Shall的過去式是should，而will的過去式是would。所以，He wondered if he would的would不可改為should，但I wondered if I would的would則改為should也可以。
