問：英文介系詞（preposition）書中，讀到以下一句，意思是不是「他的身材多出兩英尺」？──He is two feet out in his measurements。

答：這一句應是說：「他的測量，有兩英尺差誤」。Out這裏作副詞（adverb），指「錯了」，這個用法，香港人似乎較為少見，謹舉三例，以供參考：

（1）My watch is out by 10 minutes / My watch is10 minutes out（我的手錶，有十分鐘的差誤）。

（2）He was way out in his calculations（他的計算錯得厲害）。

答：Doom作動詞，指「決定（某人、物的）命運」，通常指不幸的命運。這個字之後，可用to帶出名詞或原形動詞（infinitive），例如：

（1）The murderer was doomed to death / to die（那謀殺犯被判處死刑）。

（2）Unable to get any education, the children are doomed to (lead) a life of poverty（那些孩子沒有機會受教育，注定一生貧困）。讀者示下那一句，to之後兩個選擇都正確。
