問：向餐廳訂位，侍應問人數，我說四個，英文是Four people還是Four persons？很多人都說persons。

答：People和persons都可以是「人」的複數說法。有些人會用persons說為數不多的人，例如：There are only three persons in the waiting room（等候室裏只有三人）。但three persons改為three people也絕對可以。劍橋字典Cambridge International Dictionary of English reservation條下例句可供參考：I'd like to make a table reservation for two people for 9 o'clock（我想預訂一張二人桌子，時間是九點鐘）。向餐廳訂位，侍應問：How many in your party?（你們一共多少人？）那位讀者可以說：Four（people/ persons）/ There are four of us（共四人）。

Persons和people的一個分別，是persons語氣較為嚴肅，所以常見於涉及法律的文字，例如：The persons who took part in the blackmail plot have yet to be brought to justice（參與勒索計劃者，還未落入法網）。第二版《朗文當代高級英漢雙解詞典》person條下例句也可供參考：The police have a department dealing with missing persons（警方有部門負責處理失蹤者）。
