Close、More closely、Closer - 古德明

問：小兒英文課本有以下一句，句中的closer是不是應改為more closely？── Hong Kong can use its well-developed market mechanism to work closer with the mainland（香港可藉其先進市場制度，和大陸更加緊密合作）。

答：用more closely的確較好。Closely和close雖然同樣可作副詞（adverb），修飾動詞，但closely多指「緊密的」，close則多指「靠近的」，例如：

（1）They worked closely together（他們緊密合作）。

（2）They stood close together（他們站得很近）。改為比較級，這兩句一是They worked more closely together，一是They stood closer together。至於to work closer together和to stand more closely together，是較少人用的寫法。
