At night、In the night、On the night；What is this - 古德明

問：At night、in the night、on the night三者，是不是at night指「晚晚如是」，in the night指「某一晚」，on the night則須和日期連用？

答：On the night是指「某一天的晚上」，但不一定要和日期連用，例如：

（1）It rained heavily on the night of his death（他去世那一晚，雨下得很大）。

（2）I called at his house on Friday night / on the night of 4 April（我星期五晚／四月四日晚往他家拜訪）。

At night沒有「晚晚如是」的意思，只是指黃昏以後的時間，例如：

（1）He arrived in the morning and left at night（他早上到來，晚上離去）。

（2）We sleep at night（我們晚上睡覺）。

In the night則是指「夜裏（某個時間）」，等於during the night，例如：

（1）He often wakes up several times in / during the night（他晚上常常醒幾次）。

（2）A burglar broke into the house in / during the night（有竊賊夜裏闖進這棟房子）。

問：小女的英文作業有一題先形容一種動物：It is white, and has long ears and red eyes（白色，長耳朵，紅眼睛），然後問：What is this?（這是甚麼？）答案據說是It is a rabbit而不是This is a rabbit（那是隻兔子），為甚麼？

答：問題既說What is this?答案一般也會用this，即This is a rabbit。假如題目問What is it?那一般就用it對答：It is a rabbit。讀者所說答案，用this其實會好一點。
