問：阿歷山大大帝說：Remember upon the conduct of each depends the fate of all。這是什麼意思？我完全讀不懂。

答：這一句稍為改寫就很明白：Remember（that）the fate of all depends upon the conduct of each（記着：各人的行為，決定大家的命運）。原句用了倒裝句法（inversion），即把「主詞（subject）＋ 動詞」（the fate of all + depends）這句子結構，改為「動詞 ＋ 主詞」。這樣的倒裝句，一般會把upon the conduct of each那樣的副詞片語（adverbial），置於句子之前，例如：

（1）On the bed lay an old man（= An old man lay on the bed一個老人躺在牀上）。

（2）Outside the examination hall were some anxious parents（= Some anxious parents were outside the examination hall試場之外，有些焦慮的父母）。阿歷山大那一句，就是用這句式。

問：As follows這說法，是不是一定要有s？

答：As follows是「如下」的意思。無論as follows帶出的事物是複數還是單數，那s都不可刪去，例如：My telephone number is/ telephone numbers are as follows（我的電話號碼如下）。

留意the following也可解作「如下」，但所帶出的事情假如是單數，就配單數動詞；是複數，則配複數動詞，例如：The following is my telephone number / The following are my telephone numbers（以下是我的電話號碼）。
