Another之後可用單數名詞，Other之後卻不可以 - 古德明

問：I don't want this broken fortune cookie. Please give me other / another one（這塊籤餅破了，我不要，請給我另一塊）這一句，應用other還是another？

答：Another之後，可以用單數名詞；other之後，卻不可以，除非other之前加the、his、some等限定詞。以下兩句都正確，但意思不同：

（1）Please give me another fortune cookie（請給我另一塊籤餅）。

（2）Please give me the other fortune cookie（請給我另外那塊籤餅）。

留意another之後，不可以用複數名詞，但可用「數字＋複數名詞」，例如：What will Hong Kong be like in another ten years?（再過十年，香港會變成怎樣？）

Other或the other等之後，都可用複數名詞，但意思有別，例如：

（1）That is what other people（＝others）say（這是有些人說的）。

（2）That is what the other people（＝the others）say（這是其他那些人說的）。

問：美國眾議院議長博納說：There ought to be basic fairness for all Americans under Obamacare。香港無綫電視把這一句譯做「醫改應對所有人公平」，意思準確嗎？Basic一字，中文應怎樣表達？

答：無綫電視那句翻譯，大致不錯，不必吹毛求疵。我的譯法則是：「奧巴馬保健計劃，應該基本上對所有美國人公平。」我不喜歡「醫改」、「政改」等簡略得不成體統的詞語。而Obamacare一字，這裏帶諷刺含義，譯做「奧巴馬保健計劃」當好一點。
