Double confirm、Double-check、To、In order to、So as to - 古德明

問：Double confirm（再次核實）一詞，經常見同事使用，字典裏卻查不到，到底正不正確？

答：Double confirm和double-check（複核）一詞結構相同，文法上也許不能算錯誤，但這個詞英語國家幾乎不見使用，而且旣已「核實」，「再核實」未免多餘，所以，這說法不宜仿效。要說核實某事物，只用confirm一字就可以；假如是複核，則應說double-check或to check once more，例如：

（1）The verbal agreement must be confirmed in writing（這口頭協議，必須用文字寫下，才算確定）。

（2）Could you double-check / check once more that the date is correct?（你可不可以再看看日期正不正確？）

問：以下一句，文法對不對？To receive要不要改為in order to receive?──You may download the apps at any of our branches, to receive latest news about our promotion offer（你可到我們任何一家分店下載應用程序，以接收我們促銷產品的最新消息）。

答：To和in order to或so as to一樣，都有「以便」的意思，只是語氣比較隨便，「以便」的意思也沒有in order to或so as to那麼明顯。讀者示下那一句，那to字不必改為in order to，但句子下半截最好改寫如下：to receive the latest news about our promotional offers。
