問：以下一句，哪個選擇正確？──I want to join in / join the competition（我想參加比賽）。
答：這一句我會用join，但用join in也絕對沒有錯。

Join和join in都可用來說「參加（某種活動）」，意思沒有分別，但說join的似乎較多，例如：I joined(in) their discussion on universal suffrage（我參與他們對普選的討論）。

說「加入（某個組織）」，則只可用join，不可用join in，例如：To make money, I decided to join the Caring Hong Kong Power（為了賺錢，我決意加入愛港力）。

問：以下一句，應用trick還是tricks？──An old dog will learn no new tricks / trick（老狗學不會新把戲）。

答：No字之後，多用複數名詞，除非所說的人或物通常只有一個，例如：

（1）The baby is just two months old. He has no teeth（那嬰兒只有兩個月大，未有牙齒）。

（2）He had no heart, or he could not have killed so many people（他殘酷無情，否則不可能殺那麼多人）。「把戲」一般不止一個，所以，說no new tricks會較好。

讀者示下那一句，當然是英文成語You can't teach an old dog new tricks的另一說法。這成語常用來說人跟不上潮流，例如：As he has difficulty coping with the changes brought by the computer, he should retire── you can't teach an old dog new tricks（他無法應付電腦帶來的轉變，追不上潮流，應該退休）。
