In、At、On - 古德明

問：說「在（某城市）」，英文多用in，例如in London（在倫敦），但有時也會用at，意思有分別嗎？

答：In、at都有「在（某地）」的意思，一般而言，in所說地方較大，at所說地方較小，例如：There are many theatres in London/ at West End（倫敦／倫敦西區有很多劇院）。

不過，用in或at，有時要看句子意思而定。假如句子把一個城市當作路線上的一點，那就會用at；假如把一個小地方當作一個立體的社區，則會用in，例如：

（1）On its way to New York, the plane refuelled at London（飛機赴紐約途中，在倫敦加油）。

（2）We lived in West End for several years（我們在倫敦西區住了幾年）。那位讀者見London之前有時用at，有時用in，就是這個道理。

問：Smoking is not allowed in / on trains（火車上不許吸煙）這一句，應用in還是on？

答：英文通常會說in a car / taxi（在汽車、的士上），而說on a train / bus / plane（在火車／巴士／飛機上），不過，假如要強調「在火車／巴士／飛機裏」，則用in也可以，例如：

（1）There were about 200 passengers on（或in） the plane（飛機上有約二百名乘客）。

（2）We must secure seats on（或in）the train（我們必須定得火車座位）。

留意汽車、的士等不宜用on，例如不要說There were five people on the car（汽車上有五個人），那on應改為in。
