鐵路告示、玩具王國 - 古德明

問：我曾在德福鐵路站見到一段告示，其中兩句似應修改，謹奉上，先生認為怎樣？

答：讀者示下的第一句是：Automatic platform gates are now installed in the eight open section stations on the Island Line, Kwun Tong Line, and Tsuen Wan Line（港島、觀塘、荃灣三線八個開放路段，月臺現已裝上自動開關門）。那位讀者認為are now installed宜改作have been installed，這改動文法雖然沒有錯，但沒有原文的are now installed那麼好。句中所謂open section stations，應是鐵路術語，一般人未必明白。假如由我寫，這一句我會寫作Automatic platform gates are now in place in stations previously without them on the Island Line等等。

讀者示下的第二句是：We are now fine-tuning the gate control system（我們目前正在精細調節自動門控制系統）。那位讀者認為are now fine-tuning宜改作have been fine-tuning，這也是不必要的：原文are now fine-tuning表示「目前正在」調節自動門系統，have been fine-tuning則強調「由過去某個時間到現在」一直在調節該系統。原句我只會刪除are now fine-tuning的now字，以免和上一句的now重複。

問：我公司有地方放玩具給小童玩，我名之為「玩具王國」，但有同事說「王」應作「皇」，對嗎？

答：中文一般說「王國」，幾乎從來不說「皇國」。「玩具王國」英文可稱為Toy Kingdom。當然，a toy kingdom也可以指一個「小王國」。
