最重要的、onto和into - 古德明

問：英國廣播公司某節目主持生前據說污辱小女孩，公司負責人道歉說：It is the victims, these women who were subject to criminal actions, who must be central in our thoughts。這一句是什麼意思？

答：這一句是說：「我們最應關心的，是受害者，即罪犯侵凌的婦女。」全句唯一難解的，應只有central一字。

Central除了指「中央的」，還可指「最重要的」，一般和to連用，例如：The well-being of our children is central to everything that we do（我們做的每一件事，都以孩子的幸福為依歸）。讀者示下那一句的central in our thoughts，改為central to our thoughts也可以：in是和thoughts連用，to是和central連用。

問：Onto和into有什麼分別？

答：一九六零年代末，我還是中學生，作文用了onto一字，給老師改為on to。那老師是位典型英國紳士，着重純正英文。當時，字典的確沒有onto一字。直到一九九零年，《簡明牛津字典》（Concise Oxford Dictionary）才收入onto，但注明這個字備受爭議（disputed）。今天，onto一般已視為正字，但偶然還是有人非議。

Onto是「到……之上」，into是「到……之內」，不應有什麼混淆，例如：

（1）He went into the house（他走進房子裏）。

（2）He climbed onto/ on to the roof（他爬到屋頂上）。
