問：要說「這個問題將於下星期一會議上討論」，以下哪個選擇最好？── The issue will be discussed at the meeting(1) next Monday(2) held next Monday(3) to be held next Monday。

答：選擇一當然是最簡潔的說法，但假如要特別提醒或告訴人家會議將於哪一天舉行，則選擇三較好。至於選擇二，文法有點問題。

根據文法，名詞之後用過去分詞（past participle，即 ed形式動詞），是說現在或過去的事；名詞之後用「to be＋過去分詞」，則是說未來的事，例如：

（1）A penny saved（= that is saved）is a penny earned（= that is earned）（省一便士，等於掙一便士）。

（2）The issue was discussed at the meeting held （ = that was held) last Monday（這個問題，上星期一的會議上討論過）。

（3）The candidates to be interviewed（= who are to be interviewed）are all women（將要面試的應徵者，全部是女人）。讀者哪一句，說未來的事，不宜用選擇二。

問：香港稅務局叫Inland Revenue Department，但inland應是指「內地」，和稅務有什麼關係？

答：Inland除了指「內地的」，也可指「國內的」，例如inland towns是「不近海岸的內地城市」，inland trade是「國內貿易」。國家的收入（revenue），來自國內的，就叫inland revenue，在美國則叫internal revenue，取義相同。Inland和internal兩字本身，則當然和稅務無關。
