Able、Capable - 古德明

問：I am capable/ able to do it（這是我能力做得到的）這一句，那個選擇較好？

答：Able一般和「to＋原形動詞（infinitive）」連用，capable則和「of＋名詞／ing動詞」連用，所以，讀者說的那一句，應用able，改為I am capable of doing it也可以。不過，兩個說法意思有點不同。

To be able to do something是指「有能力做某事」，to be capable of（doing）something則多指「有能力做某事，而那能力也許還未發揮」，例如：

（1）I am not able to tell the difference between the two（兩者有什麼分別，我不知道）。

（2）Every true communist is capable of telling the most barefaced lies（每個真正共產黨員，都可以公然無恥說謊）。

第一句的am not able to tell可改為較常用的cannot tell，但很少會改為am not capable of telling；第二句的is capable of telling則不宜改為is able to tell，因為總有黨員未把說謊能力完全發揮。第二版《朗文當代高級英漢雙解詞典》有以下例句：She's capable of murder when she loses her temper（她發脾氣時，連殺人的事都做得出來）。這capable of也是指「未發揮的能力」，不可用able to取代。

Able和capable用在名詞之前，意思也有點不同。韋氏同義詞典Webster's New World Dictionary of Synonyms說："Able" sometimes suggests superior power or skill."Capable" usually implies the mere meeting of ordinary requirements（Able有時表示能力出眾，capable通常只表示符合一般條件）。所以，an able craftsman是個出色的手工匠，a capable craftsman則是個勝任的手工匠。
