問：一篇起訴狀有「請求確認原告的決議有效」一語，我譯做to petition for recognising the validity of the resolution made by the plaintiff，上司改為to petition for confirmation as valid the resolution made by the plaintiff，這修改有沒有問題？

答：Confirmation as valid the resolution這說法頗不妥當。文法上，你可以說to confirm the resolution as valid或to confirm as valid the resolution（確認決議有效）。讀者那位上司，顯然是把名詞confirmation當作動詞confirm那樣用，於是有confirmation as valid the resolution的說法。

但動詞用法和名詞不同，confirm the resolution可改為confirmation of the resolution，卻不可改為confirmation the resolution。讀者上司那個寫法之不當，只要把as valid二字略去，就無所遁形。而as valid兩字，文法上是不必要的。

「請求確認原告的決議有效」一語，或可改譯如下：to petition for confirmation of the validity of the resolution made by the plaintiff。

問：With all this food, it looks as if there's a typhoon coming（有這麼多食物，似乎颱風將臨）一語，all this food是不是應作all these foods？

答：Food泛指食物，是不可數名詞（uncountable noun），所以all this food不應改為all these foods。Food指某種食物，才作可數名詞，例如：

（1）Skimmed milk is a health food（脫脂奶是健康食品）。

（2）He is into health foods（他嗜好健康食品）。
