說出苦況、敬請賜示 - 古德明

問：香港一分英文報紙有以下一句："I will speak for the grassroots and the workers and will voice out the hardships they encounter in daily life," she said（她說：「我會為草根階層和工人執言，說出他們日常生活的困苦。」）Voice之後為什麼用out？

答：Voice作動詞，指「（公開）說出」，例如：The lawmaker voiced his objection to the proposed legislation（該立法議員公言反對建議的法案）。Voice之後不用out字。讀者示下那一句並不妥當，不宜仿效。我常說新聞報道倉卒成章，有錯並不奇怪，這是另一例子。Will voice out the hardships假如改為will give voice to the hardships，當會好一點。

問：Please advise me of / on your availability on the meeting（閣下能否出席會議，敬請賜示）這一句，應用of還是on？

答：Advise解作「通知」，其後可用「of＋名詞」，也可用that / who子句（clause），例如：

（1）I wrote to advise him of the time of the meeting（我寫信通知他開會的時間）。

（2）He advised me that the rules had changed（他通知我說，規例變了）。不過，這個意思的advise，「公函」氣味很濃，不少英語學者都覺得略嫌生硬，不如改用較自然的notify、inform等。

又讀者那一句的availability之後，介系詞應用for。全句應作Please advise/ notify/ inform me of your availability for the meeting。
