刻板字母、天氣預告 - 古德明

問：大學聯合招生放榜之後，《星島日報》有報道說，一些準大學生「連block letter都不懂得是指英文大寫字母」。但查維基百科，block letter似不是專指大寫，先生認為怎樣？

答：拙欄年前說過，「block可以指印刷用的印板，block letters即『刻板字母』，block capital letters就是『刻板體的大寫字母』」。所以，block letter其實不專指大寫字母；所以，維基百科指出：It is often misconstrued that one must write in capital letters when writing in block letters（不少人誤以為寫block letter，就必須用大寫字母）。

不過，由於誤會太深，不少字典索性以訛為正。例如第七版《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》說，block letters等於block capitals。較具學術地位的《新牛津英文字典節本》（The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary）block letters條下的解釋則準確一點：（esp capital）letters written without serifs and separate from each other（沒有襯線、寫時各不相連的字母，多為大寫字母）。所謂「襯線」，指字母筆畫上下方所加的短線，例如把H、M寫作H、M。

問：Weather forecast（天氣預告）可不可改為weather predict？

答：Weather forecast是固定用語，不宜隨便改動。而且上述的forecast是名詞，predict則是動詞。你可以to forecast/ predict the weather或to make a weather forecast（預告天氣），卻不可make a weather predict。
