問:聽到有人說Time hangs heavy,但修飾動詞hang,不是應用副詞(adverb)heavily嗎?
答:Time hangs heavy直譯是「時間重重的掛着」,表示時間似乎過得很慢,常用語time hangs heavy on one's hands即「無法打發時間」、「無聊得發慌」,例如:After his retirement, time hangs heavy on his hands(他退休之後,發覺時間很難打發)。
(1)To the end of his life, the guilt lay/weighed heavy on his conscience(他到死那天,良心都深感罪咎)。
(2)The smog hung heavy over Hong Kong(煙霧籠罩香港)。以上例句的heavy,改為heavily也可以,但heavily似乎沒有heavy那麼常見。
作副詞的heavy也常用於連字號(hyphen)合成的形容詞,例如a heavy-built man(= a heavily built man體格魁梧的漢子)、 a heavy-laden ship(= a heavily laden ship滿載的船)等。
問:以下一句,怎麼沒有主詞(subject)?── To write more coherently, trace the transitions in a book or well-written article(要文字組織得較好,可留意書本或優秀文章的起承轉合)。
答:Trace the transitions一語,和Please sit down(請坐)、Raise your hands(舉手)等一樣,是祈使句(imperative sentence),主詞是you(should/can等),只是不必寫出來而已。
