問：以下一句，哪個選擇正確？──Most mothers are willing to devote their whole life to caring / care their children（多數母親都願意一輩子悉心照顧兒女）。

答：這一句有三處值得斟酌。第一，mothers旣是複數形式，life最好也改為複數的lives；第二，「照顧某人」英文是to care for somebody或to take care of somebody，不能說to care somebody。至於「把Ｘ奉獻給Ｙ」，可說to devote X to Y，那Ｘ、Ｙ都應是名詞或動名詞（gerund，卽ing動詞）。所以，讀者示下那一句，可改寫如下：Most mothers are willing to devote their whole lives to caring for（或to the care of）their children。

問：要表示「謝謝參與」，以下哪個說法較好？──Thank you for your presence/ your attending。

答：「謝謝參與」英文最好說Thank you for your attendance，說Thank you for your presence也可以，但通常不會說Thank you for your attending，因為attend旣有名詞attendance，就不必用動名詞attending，除非要說明參與的是什麼，例如：Thank you for（your）attending the seminar（謝謝參與研討會）。留意括弧裏的your一字，並不必要，而且說起來頗為拗口，一般不會用。

問：「汗」是sweat，「大汗」怎麼說？

答：「大汗」是heavy sweat，例如：He borke into a heavy sweat（他大汗直冒）。
