Sleep in、Oversleep、On the mainland、In mainland China - 古德明

問：看美國電影Home Alone（寶貝智多星），聽到一名演員說，可能趕不上搭飛機，因為遲了起牀：We slept in。這slept in和overslept有什麼分別？

答：To sleep in也作to lie in，指比平常遲起牀，而遲起牀可能是有意的；to oversleep則指無意中睡過頭，時間失卻預算，例如：

（1）After six days of hard work, I like to sleep in / lie in until 10:30 am on Sunday（辛勤工作六天之後，星期天我喜歡睡懶覺，直睡到上午十點半）。

（2）I overslept and was late for the meeting（我睡過了頭，開會遲到）。讀者示下那一句，slept in改為overslept也可以。

To sleep in還有另一個意思，指傭人居住僱主家中，也作to live in，例如：We would like to have a nanny who can sleep in（我們想找個來我們家中住下的保姆）。居住僱主家中的傭人，就叫做sleep-in / live-in servant。

問：讀英文報紙，見到the illegal sale of genetically modified rice on the mainland（大陸有基因改造米非法出售）這樣的說法。但我平常見到的說法是in the mainland，不是on。兩者有什麼分別？

答：In the mainland是個香港常見但錯誤的說法，正式說法是on the mainland。假如要說「在中國大陸」，則說in mainland China也可以，例如：Human rights are not worth a damn on the Chinese mainland / in mainland China（人權在中國大陸一文不值）。
