《傲慢與偏見》的問題 - 古德明

問：《傲慢與偏見》第二十九回有以下兩句：

（1）Lady Catherine very much objected to be kept waiting for her dinner（凱瑟琳夫人吃晚飯，最不喜歡要等候）。

（2）She was not used to have her judgement controverted（她發表意見，向來不慣受人反駁）。Object to和be used to之後，不是應用 ing動詞的嗎？

答：這位讀者說得對。上述兩句，假如不是出於名作家之手，今天一定會視為錯誤，須改為objected to being kept waiting以及was not used to having等。

不過，《傲慢與偏見》是十九世紀初英國小說家奧斯汀的作品，而當時的文法和今天稍有不同。一九九三年版The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles（最新牛津英文字典節本：按文字史原則編篡）use條有以下注釋：「be used to, to doing,（arch）to do」。換言之，be used to之後用ing動詞，但舊式英文可用to do之類原形動詞（infinitive）。

至於object to，請看一九八九年版Webster's Dictionary of English Usage（韋氏英文用法詞典）：「What follows "(object) to" may be a noun, prououn, gerund, or infinitive」。換言之，object to之後可用名詞、代名詞、ing動詞或原形動詞。不過，二十世紀初著名英文學者福勒（Henry Watson Fowler）A Dictionary of Modern English Usage（現代英文用法詞典）object條下指出，今天不應用原形動詞：「The infinitive construction is deprecated and the gerund recommended」。
