問：Our office is to / has to move to the ABC Building the soonest這一句，應用is to還是has to？又soonest之前要不要用the？

答：這一句確實是什麼意思，我不大清楚。假如是說「我們的辦公室，將先於其他辦公室遷往ABC大樓」，那可以說Our office is to move to the ABC Building before the other offices；假如要說「我們的辦公室，不久將遷往ABC大樓」，可說Our office is to move to the ABC Building soon；假如要說「我們的辦公室，須盡快遷往ABC大樓」，可說Our office is to move to the ABC Building as soon as possible。

文法上，Our office is to / has to move to the ABC Building兩個說法都正確，但is to有「根據安排」含義，has to則是「必須」的意思。

至於soonest，一般要和the字連用，指「最快」。一首英文歌歌詞可作例子：The sweetest apple is the soonest rotten/ And the hottest love is the soonest cold（最甜的蘋果最先腐爛，最熱烈的愛情最先轉冷）。

問：陸谷孫《英漢大詞典》induction條例句Mary's induction into womanhood譯作「瑪麗的跨入婦女成年期」，看來很古怪，是不是譯錯了？

答：Induction是「就職禮」、「成為會員」、「入門」的意思，這裏引伸解作「瑪麗到了成年」。詞典力求譯出原文不完整的文法結構，而且要把womanhood一字全義譯出，唯恐讀者誤解，無可厚非，雖然中文讀起來難免古怪，但不能算是錯譯。
