Nil by mouth、homelands - 古德明

問：在醫院看到病牀掛着Nil by mouth這告示，表示病人須禁止飲食，這是醫學用語嗎？英文有其他同義說法嗎？

答：Nil by mouth當然是醫學用語。這個詞是拉丁文nil per os的翻譯，所以縮寫是NPO，例如：

（1）He was placed on NPO status for eight hours before general anaesthesia（他全身麻醉之前八小時，不得飲食）。

（2）Nil by mouth was ordered for the patient before the examination（按醫生吩咐，病人檢驗之前，須停止飲食）。Nil by mouth的另一說法是nothing by mouth，但這沒有nil by mouth那麼常用。

問：香港有些人在香港、外國都有其家。以香港、加拿大為家的人，可不可以說Both Hong Kong and Canada are my homelands（香港、加拿大都是我家鄉）？查《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》，homeland是the country where a person was born（一個人出生所在的國家）。人不可以有兩個出生地吧？

答：Homeland其實不一定指「出生地」。麥美倫英文詞典Macmillan Contemporary Dictionary homeland條下解釋準確一點：one's native or adopted land（某人的故鄉或所卜居的地方）。多數人只有一個homeland，所以這個字多用單數形式，但用複數形式也絕對正確，例如：I love Macao as much as I love Hong Kong, and consider them equally as my homelands（我香港、澳門一樣喜歡，也一樣視為我的故鄉）。
