問：英國有出版社廣告說：Every New Year, throughout the Medieval and Renaissance periods, the great courts of Europe held huge banquets at which lords and ladies would gather。這一句的would gather改為gathered，會不會較好？

答：那句英文是說：「中世紀與文藝復興時代，每逢新年，歐洲大國的宮廷，都會舉辦盛筵，貴家子女雲集。」句中的would，說過去習慣或經常如此的事，例如英國名著Wuthering Heights第四回說希思格利夫小時常給欣德利毆打，但他眼睛都不眨一下：He would stand Hindley's blows without winking。假如把這一句的would stand改為stood，則可能是說希思格利夫有一次給毆打的情況，而不是經常這樣。

當然，假如句子前文已清楚說明某事是習慣或經常如此的，那麼，可以不用would。英語學者William Strunk所作The Elements of Style第四章就說，以下一句的would visit，假如改為visited，句子會更簡潔有力：Once a year he would visit the old mansion（他每年都會到那棟古老大廈一次）。不過，卽使句子表明某事習慣或經常如是，用would也未必不好。英國作家毛姆名著Of Human Bondage第二十三回有以下一句：Occasionally she and Philip would go out and paint little pictures（有時，她會和菲利浦一起外出，繪畫小圖畫）。這一句的would go和讀者示下那一句的would gather，都大可不必改為went和gathered。
