問：The thief was caught in the toils of law / the law（那小偷陷入法網）這一句，應用law還是the law？

答：Law不用冠詞the，是泛指「法律」，也可以指「法律」這個觀念，例如：

（1）He is studying law（他學習法律）。

（2）Mr Wolf's word is law（狼先生的話就是法律）。

The law是指某地的整套法律，例如：

（1）You must observe the law (of the land)（你必須遵守（這地方的）法律）。

（2）It is against / within the law to smoke in the street（在街上吸煙，違反／不違反這地方的法律）。

讀者示下那一句，用the，是強調「陷入當地法網」；不用the，則是說「陷入法網」。不用the的說法應較為常見。

問：在報上讀到以下一句：He said the chance of a higher signal being issued was not high（他說大概不會發出較高級的信號）。句中的being issued，文法上是怎樣用的？

答：Chance of之後，必須用名詞或動名詞（即ing動詞），例如：

（1）There is no chance of rain this afternoon（今天下午不可能下雨）。

（2）What is the chance of his / him winning the scholarship?（他贏得獎學金的機會有多大？）第二句的his，說來拗口，一般會改為him。讀者示下那一句，用的就是這句式，a higher signal being issued文法上等於him winning。
