問：本月初，英國首相卡梅倫訪四川，在杜甫草堂題詞說：With thanks for allowing me to see such a place of beauty and tranquility（辱承嘉惠，得訪如此寧謐美景，幸何如之）。我見過Thanks for doing something這句式，卡梅倫為什麼卻在thanks之前加with一字？

答：With的這個用法，其實很常見。例如今天的電郵，往往以Best wishes、Best regards等客套語作結，但也可改寫作With best wishes、With best regards等。

從前，英文書信習慣用完整句子結尾。十九世紀初英國作家John Nichols編寫的十八世紀文學史資料Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century卷三有John Loveday一七七一年九月十九日致Dr Ducarel的信，最後一句就是：With many thanks for the favours you have already conferred upon me, and with my father's compliments to you, I remain, Sir, your very humble servant（拜賜已多，謹致謝忱，並代家父問好。僕……謹上）。那with帶出片語（phrase），下接主句I remain等等，其後是寫信者姓名。

今天，世人覺得上述寫法過分誇張。為求平實，道謝信往往以（With）Many thanks for your kindness之類句子作結，其後逕用句號。至於主句I remain等等，則以Yours sincerely等取代。卡梅倫用的，就是那with句式。
