He assisted me to pass my examination(他幫助我考試及格)這一句,究竟正不正確?《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》說assist之後,可用「受詞(object)+ to + 原形動詞(infinitive)」,《朗文當代高級英漢雙解詞典》卻說,這句式不正確。

He assisted me in passing my examination。

據韋氏英文用法詞典Webster's Dictionary of English Usage統計,「assist + 受詞 + in + ing 動詞」這句式最常見,「assist + 受詞 + to + 原形動詞」次之,「assist + 受詞 +(不帶to)原形動詞」又次之。

說到「幫助」,help someone to do something和help someone do something這兩個句式,一般都視為通用,但一九八五年版錢伯斯英文用法指南Chambers Pocket Guide to Good English卻說:"To" may only be omitted when the subject of the verb "help" is directly and actively involved in the action of the verb which follows(Help之後的主詞必須直接、主動參與協助,才可畧去to字)。 This book helped me to understand the theory of relativity(這本書幫我明白了相對論)。
