俯視萬物、紅原子筆 - 古德明

問：英文歌"Top of the World"有以下一句：I'm on the top of the world, looking down on creation（我在世界最高處，俯視萬物）。按look down on是「輕視」，「俯視」是不是應說look down at？

答：Look down on something / someone原意是「俯視某物/某人」，「輕視」是引伸的意思，只是這引伸的意思今天比原意較為常見。當然，說look down at something / someone也可以，例如：I looked down on/ at the city from the peak（我在山頂俯視這城市）。

十九世紀英國詩人白朗寧（Robert Browning）有一首長詩《所羅》（Saul），說這個以色列明君有如臨照大地的太陽：Each deed thou hast done / Dies, revives, goes to work in the world; until e'en as the sun / Looking down on the earth...（汝之所為，衰而復振，行於世上，如太陽臨照大地）。這一句的on，也可改為at。

問：「紅原子筆」我從前的英文老師說是red ball pen，但我看過一本書說，「原子筆」不可叫ball pen，而應叫ballpoint pen，對嗎？

答：「原子筆」叫ball pen、ballpoint pen或ballpoint都可以，例如：I used a red ball pen / ballpoint（pen） to underline his spelling mistakes（我用紅原子筆在他拼錯的字下畫一條線）。

Ball pen這個詞，我查過十多本字典，包括《牛津高階英文詞典》和《朗文當代英文詞典》，都不見收錄，頗為奇怪。但英文詞典巨擘Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language有以下一條：「ball pen: ball-point pen。」
