問：As our student, you can make an appointment to enjoy free dental services這一句，英文老師把an字刪去，為什麼？

答：這一句是說：「你是我們學生，可以預約獲得免費牙醫服務。」原句的appointment應作可數名詞（countable noun），那an不應刪去。句子文法沒有錯，但改寫如下會好一點：As our student, you are entitled to free dental services（你是我們學生，可獲免費牙醫服務）。真正預約，那才用appointment一字，例如：I made an appointment with the dental clinic for a dental check-up（我和牙科診所約了時間，去檢查牙齒）。


問：電影《悲慘世界》有以下歌詞：When the beating of the heart / Echoes the beating of the drums, / There is a life about to start。這是不是叫人跟隨自己的心智參與運動？

答：英文「心跳」叫heartbeat，「鼓響」叫drum beat，同樣用beat字，中文翻譯不妨同樣用一個字把兩者連起來：「你的心聲，和鼓聲呼應，就是新生活快將開始的時候。」所謂「鼓聲」，當然是指革命的戰鼓。戰鼓在呼喚民眾加入反對獨裁者的革命。所以歌詞後文說：Will you join in our crusade?（你會加入我們神聖的戰爭嗎？）又說：Join in the fight / That will give you the right to be free（加入戰鬥，就可以獲得自由的權利）。
