問：要立匾表揚一位植物學家，說到「她一生對植物學的出色貢獻」，英文以下哪個說法較好：her lifetime outstanding contribution/ her lifetime of outstanding contribution to botanical research。

答：Lifetime是「終生」，是名詞，但常用來修飾另一名詞，指「終生的」，例如：

（1）He won an Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award shortly before he died（他去世前不久，獲頒奧斯卡終生成就獎）。

（2）A lifetime of poverty / A lifetime's poverty has inured him to such treatment（他一生窮困，已經習慣了這種待遇）。

用來修飾另一名詞，lifetime一般直接置於那名詞之前。讀者示下的第一個說法，lifetime和contribution之間隔了outstanding這個形容詞，就不大好。以下兩個說法當較佳：her outstanding lifetime contribution / her lifetime of outstanding contribution to botanical research。

問：我住的大學宿舍不少外國學生。他們常常會問：How is it going?應怎樣回答？

答：How is it going?和How are you?或How are you doing?等一樣，都是見面時說的問候語，等於中文「你好嗎？」回答可以說：（It is going）Pretty well或Very well或Fine等，其後可加一個thank you或thanks，都是「還好，謝謝」的意思。假如你的情況不大好，也可照實說：Not too well, I am afraid（唉，不大好）。
