再談「捨不得」 - 古德明

問：貴欄說「捨不得」可以譯做grudge或begrudge，但這兩個字可以用來說「捨不得某人離去」嗎？例如「母親捨不得我到外國讀書」可不可以說My mother grudges my studying aboard？

答：首先要說的，是「在海外」是abroad，在「船、車輛或飛機上」則是aboard，兩字不可混淆，例如：

（1）He went abroad to France（他遠赴海外的法國）。

（2）He went aboard the ship/He went on board the ship（他上了船）。

Grudge或begrudge所說的「捨不得」，一般是指捨不得出錢、給人家一些東西等，不可用來說「捨不得和人家分別」。翻譯絕對不可以一成不變，必須按文意用字，例如「母親捨不得我到外國讀書」可以簡簡單單翻譯如下：Mother is sad that I am going abroad for my studies。

至於「我也捨不得和母親分別」，則可譯做I also am finding it hard to part with Mother。Part with是「和……分別」、「捨棄……」的意思，特別是捨棄或別離捨不得的人、物。《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》第七版part with something條下的解釋就是：「放棄、交出（尤指不捨得的東西）。」而第三版有一例句：He hates to part with his money（他很捨不得花錢）。麥美倫出版社的English Prepositional Idioms則有以下例句：Mr Jackson has rendered very valuable service to the firm over a number of years, and we are very sorry to part with him（傑克遜先生為敝公司服務多年，貢獻良多，而今離任，殊為可惜）。
